Entrevista com o escritor Amos Oz.

Would you consider the present ground offensive to be limited or unlimited?
I think in some points it is excessive. I don't have detailed information on what is actually happening on the ground, but to judge from some of the hits that the Israeli army caused in Gaza, I think at least in some points the military action is excessive - justified, but excessive.


Can you imagine a Palestinian state that is not hostile toward Israel?
Absolutely. I believe the majority of the Palestinians are not in love with Israel, but they do accept with clenched teeth that the Israeli Jews are not going anywhere, just like the majority of Israeli Jews - unhappily and with clenched teeth - accept that the Palestinians are here to stay. This is a basis not for a honeymoon, but perhaps for a fair divorce just like the case of the Czech Republic and Slovakia.


Hamas is presently demanding that the blockade of the Gaza Strip be lifted…
I am absolutely for it. I think that the blockade should be removed. I think plenty of international, Arab and Israeli resources should be pumped into the Gaza strip in return for effective demilitarization. This is a proposal that Israel ought to make immediately.


You wrote 50 years ago that "even an unavoidable occupation is a corrupting occupation."
I do not always agree with myself, but here I still agree with myself. Occupation is corrupting, even if it is unavoidable. Brutality, chauvinism, narrow-mindedness, xenophobia are the usual syndromes of conflict and occupation. But the Israeli occupation of the West Bank is no longer unavoidable.

Palestina e Gaza

Já estive na Palestina e pude ver a humilhação diária a que os palestinianos são sujeitos por Israel. É total ignorância dizer que os Palestinianos são muçulmanos. São muçulmanos, claro. Mas também muitos cristãos árabes. As comunidades cristãs da palestina já eram cristãs antes dos europeus o serem. 

E Israel é hoje um estado racista, que só aceita Judeus, tratando como cidadãos de segunda os arábes que lá vivem desde antes de 1946.

Abdallah Abu Rahmah

Abdallah Abu Rahmah é professor numa escola do Patriarcado Latino, perto de Ramallah, e coordenador do comité popular contra o muro e os colonatos na vila de Bil'in.
Foi preso às duas da manhã. Os soldados israelenses entraram em sua casa e prenderam-no na presença da mulher e dos filhos.
Antes da prisão este activista da não violência foi visitado por Desmond Tutu, Jimmy Carter, Fernando Henrique Cardoso, Mary Robinson e Gro Brundtland (ver foto), do grupo the Elders, criado por Nelson Mandela.

Carta da prisão em Israel

É impressionante esta carta enviada por Abdallah Abu Rahmah, palestiniano preso pelos israelitas.

Foi condenado a uma pena de prisão por protestar pacificamente contra a construção de um muro que é ilegal...

Termina deste modo:

"My eldest daughter Luma was nine years old when I was arrested. She is now ten.
After my arrest she began going to the Friday demonstrations in our village. She always carries a picture of me in her arms.
The adults try to look after her but I still worry for my little girl. I wish that she could enjoy her childhood like other children, that she could be studying and playing with her friends. But through the walls and barbed wire that separates us I hear my daughter’s message to me, saying: "Baba, they cannot stop us. If they take you away, we will take your place and continue to struggle for justice."
This is the message that I want to bring you today. From beyond the walls, the barbed wire, and the prison bars that separate Palestinians and Israelis. "

Breaking the Silence

O site Breaking the Silence é uma iniciativa de um grupo de veteranos do exército israelita que recolheu mais de 700 depoimentos de soldados sobre as acções militares de Israel nos territórios palestinianos.

"Soldiers who serve in the Territories witness and participate in military actions which change them immensely. Cases of abuse towards Palestinians, looting, and destruction of property have been the norm for years, but are still excused as military necessities, or explained as extreme and unique cases. Our testimonies portray a different, and much grimmer picture. While this reality is known to Israeli soldiers and commanders, Israeli society continues to turn a blind eye, and to deny that which happens in its name. Discharged soldiers who return to civilian life discover the gap between the reality which they encountered in the Territories, and the silence which they encounter at home. In order to become civilians again, soldiers are forced to ignore what they have seen and done. Breaking the Silence voices the experiences of these soldiers, forcing Israeli society to address the reality which it has helped to create."

Por estes dias: Bispos da Europa e EUA na Terra Santa

De 10 a 15 de janeiro, tem lugar a tradicional visita à Terra Santa dos bispos da comissão de coordenação das Conferências Episcopais da Europa e dos EUA, para apoiar a Igreja Católica e os cristãos dos lugares santos.

O bispo Kelly renova seu apelo «ao cessar imediato de toda violência em Gaza». «O conflito tem raízes profundas, mas se deve acabar com o bloqueio de toda ajuda humanitária – diz o arcebispo. É urgente uma liderança sábia e valente que possa conseguir a paz e relegar a violência ao passado.

Não se pode permanecer calados perante a injustiça, mas proclamar a reconciliação. Este é o objetivo de nossa visita à Terra Santa».

«O objetivo da comissão de coordenação – explica o prelado inglês – sempre foi estar ao lado das Igrejas na Terra Santa, em fidelidade aos dois mandamentos de Deus: nunca permanecer calados frente à injustiça e à violência e proclamar sempre e viver a reconciliação querida por Nosso Senhor naquele monte chamado Calvário».

Estão previstas também visitas ao presidente israelense Simon Peres e ao palestino Abu Mazen.
